Garnet is one of the most admired among many gemstones because of its rich color. Almandine, pyrope, spessartine, grossular, andradite and uvarovite all belong to the garnet group of minerals. Also included among the garnet family are goldmanite, calderite, knorringite, henritermierite, majorite, kimzeyite, hibschite, katoite, morimotoite and schorlomite. Garnet also appears as a combination of almandine and pyrope known as rhodolite garnet or pyrope-almandine garnet. Because garnet also exists in combination of these minerals, garnet is said to be complex and complicated. Other common names of garnet include Tsavorite, Hessonite, Malaya, Mozambique, Mandarin, Ant-hill, Leuco, Hydrogrossular, Demantoid, Melanite, Topazolite and Thai. These names are taken from the place where the garnets are found.

Garnet is admired by many but some people consider garnet to be of inferior quality when compared with other gemstones. It is maybe because garnets are abundant and are widely used. Following the rules of supply and demand, garnets are priced lower than other gems with lesser supply. Aside from a good material for jewelry, garnet has other uses unknown to most people. The harder varieties of garnet like almandite can be used as an abrasive when it is in the form of sand. It can be used to replace silica sand for sand blasting. Garnet - when mixed with highly pressurized water, can be used to cut steel. It is also plays an important role in the different studies being conducted for igneous and metamorphic rocks.
